Abstract

Purpose–The unforeseen outburst of the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdown turned
bizarre for India’s IT industry that generated revenues close to US$180 billion in 2019,
according to NASSCOM. The IT industry, which collectively employs 4.36 million
employees as of 2020, rapidly moved towards the teleworking concept to fight the COVID19 lockdown slump, and this model has become a new normal. This research examines the
relationships between theoretically stated aspects of the teleworking concept and individually
perceived work autonomy and employee productivity while working from home and the
factors influencing the same. This study focused on employees of the top-five IT companies
listed by NASSCOM in Bangalore City.
Design/methodology/approach - A survey was conducted to test how teleworking impacts
the productivity of employees in the IT sector. Data collected from 517 respondents were
(20% each) from top-five IT employers, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, and IBM, listed by
NASSCOM, located in Bangalore City.
