AN ANALYSIS OF EXPORTS PERFORMANCE OF INDIAN PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY DURING PRE AND POST-TRIPS PERIOD
Abstract
The Indian pharmaceutical industry has been undergone significant changes in light of
introduced economic reforms in respect of foreign direct investment, licensing policy, import
restrictions, production control and TRIPS regime January 2005. The initiation of TRIPS has
significantly impacted the export performance of Indian pharmaceutical firms. This is one of
the innovative research studies that present trade performance of Indian pharmaceutical
industry during the pre and post-TRIPS periods (1995-2018). The present study attempts to
cover the Indian pharmaceutical industry trade from 1995 to 2018, based on secondary data
available from Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy’s (CMIE) Economic Outlook. The
main objective of this paper is to find out the trends in export and import of pharmaceutical
products during the study period. The major finding of the study is that the export of drugs
(formulations) is more than the imports of pharmaceutical products. The findings of this
research will contribute to the growing evidence regarding export performance in emerging
economies.
