Abstract

The usages of social networking sites involves entertainment to self-indulgent purposes or obtaining information to online shopping. The multilateral usage of social networking sites has also been embedded in academic purposes to assist students in creating online platform for various academic interactions. Thus, this paper analyzes another usage of social networking sites from the perspective of Indonesian university students that during their studies are required to integrate social networking sites as part of their coursework and whether the usage of these sites augments their academic achievements during teaching and learning sessions. This study utilized a qualitative method in the form of mini focus group discussion of four undergraduate students from a reputable university in Jakarta about their experiences and perceptions of using social networking sites as part of an integrated learning activity. It discussed uses, benefits, and limitations of most commonly used social networking sites and by applying literature review of connectivism (Siemens, 2005; Downes, 2010), and technology acceptance model (TAM) of Davis and colleagues (Davis, 1989; Davis, Bagozzi, & Warshaw, 1989); the result of the study was analyzed using narrative analysis. The findings of this study suggest that the use of social networking sites has an integral part in academic activity where it could significantly facilitate in amassing the students’ portfolio. However, personal and academic usage of the site are essential to be separated due to the inclination of maintaining personality branding. And lastly, recommendations for educators on how to integrate social networking sites usage in class.
