A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP AMONG MIGRANT POPULATION IN INDIA
Abstract
In recent times migrant entrepreneurship is receiving attention from policy makers, stakeholders and scholars emphasizing “migrant entrepreneurship” represent an alternative form of decent and sustainable employment. In India, migrant population play an essential role in the urban workforce. ‘Migrant entrepreneurship’ refers to business deeds undertaken by migrant inhabitants with a specific socio-cultural and ethnic background or migrant origin. The studies on migrant entrepreneurship in many countries, including India has recognized that the large share of migrants play an imperative role in country’s economy by taking part in the Medium-scale Enterprises, and MSME as well. In the context of migrant entrepreneurship, several researchers have pointed out the impact of different migrant groups and cultures on entrepreneurship. Secrete behind migrant groups to compete in business is because of importance they give to their humanitarian values, social and business attitude, family, religious ties and trust. Against this background, the aim of this paper is to review and evaluate entrepreneurship among migrant population in India, from the perspective of cultural diversity, opportunities and support from the Government of India to develop skills among the migrant work force. The paper investigates key measures to extend tangible support to the migrant entrepreneurship and ways to support early-stage migrant entrepreneurs.
