ROLE OF THE TIWAS IN ANTI BRITISH MOVEMENT

Abstract

The Northeastern region is known for its diversity as different tribes inhabit the region. Tiwa is one such tribe of Mongoloid origin residing in Assam and  Meghalaya. In the linguistic perspective the Tiwa language belong to the Bodo-Naga sub group of Tibeto- Burman group of Sino- Tibetan language family. They are culturally and historically a very rich tribe. They have contributed immensely to the cause of freedom struggle in India. They are known for  organizing the first peasant uprising against British imperialism in Assam. This uprising is popularly known as the “Phulaguri Dhewa” or Phulaguri Battle” of 1861. The following paper is a study of the same as well as their other contributions to the freedom struggle against the British.
