Abstract

The study attempted to analysis the problems and challenges faced by urban working women in the workplace at Tuticorin District, Tamilnadu. A mixed methods approach involving face to face interviews, focus group discussions and questionnaire technique including both close-ended and open-ended questions was chosen for effective elicitation of data from the respondents. Survey method was adapted for establishing validity and reliability of the study. The data reflected that gender bias related to promotions do not prevail much in the working atmosphere. The result also revealed that 55.6% felt that their promotion was based on merit and not on the basis of favoritism or any other indecent proposal, 68.9% were agreed that they were working as much as male colleagues. With respect to attitude of boss towards respondents; the data highlighted that 65.5% female agreed that their boss attitude towards them were Co-operative and 66.7% of females felt sometimes hesitant to work with male colleagues. Regarding sexual abuse; 85.6% women informed that they had not faced any kind of sexual abuse at their workplace and 61% of the females are sure that their organization will not act against sexual accused. With respect to health complications; the data analyzed that 72.2% of the women were suffered from health complications and 50% informed that they were quite their jobs when they were harassed at work place. So, it is concluded that most of the urban working women in the workplace were faced problems.
