Abstract

Iraq includes many cities that contain archaeological sites dating back to different historical periods, such as Baghdad, Babylon and others. These sites suffer from many problems as a result of neglect and attacks that led to the demolition of part of the archaeological sites and historical buildings in them. Hence the importance of preserving these historical and archaeological sites. This research aims to study and analyze the study area that is represented by the Al-Mustansiriya School and to develop proposals and a strategic plan to revive and develop the site aesthetically, visually and functionally as a model for restoring heritage in the old city of Baghdad, which helps in finding a harmonious and aesthetic visual and aesthetic composition in terms of spaces, green spaces, site furniture and architectural style. This is done by assessing the current reality of this site, determining its positive and negative effects, and studying the composition of the urban fabric and its architectural components. The results of the study indicated that the Al-Mustansiriya School contains many valuable architectural and heritage elements, but these elements need protection and revival. The site of Al-Mustansiriya School, close to the banks of the Tigris, constitutes an important site. The results also indicated a poor awareness of the population of the importance of these valuable elements and the need to preserve them. The study concluded with a set of recommendations, the most important of which is the need to take advantage of our proposals to revive and develop the Al-Mustansiriya school, which was included in the study. And work to develop and enhance the level of awareness among the residents of Baghdad in particular and the residents of the Old City in general about the importance of preserving the architectural and heritage elements in it. Because it is the site of important tourist attraction.
