Exodontia can simply be defined as the painless removal of a tooth or a part of tooth with least injury caused to the surrounding tissue, thus letting the wound heal more uneventfully. The present study aims to evaluate the various reasons /indications of transalveolar extraction performed in an university setting at Saveetha Dental College.
A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted with about 140 cases of transalveolar extraction selected among 86000 out patient records from the period of June 2019-March 2020 . The study population was analysedand statistically evaluated using the IBM-SPSS software version 20. The results were represented as graphs and tables.
From the present study results it was evident that the middle aged group 31-40 (39.3%), males(59.3%) were the most prevalent to undergo trans-alveoar extraction. The lower molars (85.0%) were the most extracted by trans-alveolar technique due to decay(carious lesion)32.1% and impaction(25.7%).
Within the limitations of this study, we conclude that trans-alveolar extraction was more commonly performed in the middle age group(31- 40 years) and lower molars were the most commonly extracted teeth. Trans-alveolar extraction was primarily indicated for grossly decayed teeth (32.1%) followed by impacted teeth (25.7%) and other reasons were loss of crown structure (10.7%), attempted closed extraction (9.3%), tooth fracture(5.7%), restoration failures (5.7%) and failed endodontic therapy (4.3%). Though trans-alveolar extraction is perceived as an aggressive procedure, with advancements in surgical techniques this procedure can be performed as atraumatically as possible which favors improved healing, thereby facilitating quicker restoration of the extracted tooth.
