PREFERENCE OF CALCIUM BIO SILICATE CEMENTS AS PULPOTOMY MEDICAMENTS IN CHILDREN BY DENTAL STUDENTS

Abstract

Pulpotomy is the most common treatment for asymptomatic primary molars with carious exposure. Formocresolhas been for years and is considered as the gold standard, but research in recent years have shown that formocresol is carcinogenic and mutagenic. Calcium biosilicate cements are materials that can form dentin bridges and hence have relatively high success rate. This study was undertaken to evaluate the preference of calcium biosilicate cements as pulpotomy medicaments by dental students.Retrospective data collected from patients visiting the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry from a Dental College from June 2019 to March 2020 and was evaluated. A total of 47 children who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study. Data was analysed using chi square test. Formocresol was preferred by 80.9% of the students whereas only 19.1% preferred calcium biosilicate cements (p value:0.007). Within the limits of the present study the , we conclude that students preferred formocresol over calcium biosilicate cements.
